This Personal Best post is a week later than I had originally planned, but I had such an exciting announcement that I didn't care. ;) And then I decided to change my whole idea to something new (well, new to me) that I am in love with. Also, heads up. It's super picture heavy so I created a jump after the intro.
Okay. So this post is more for the folks who subscribe to blogs straight to their email. Which was totally me until literally 5 days ago. I've recently read a few blogs about how upsetting it is that Google is dropping their reader. I thought to mysef, "What's the big deal? Get them straight to your inbox. No biggie." But not everyone likes to wake up to 60 unread emails a day. I mean, not that I enjoyed it... It was actually kind of daunting. And my husband hates hearing my phone vibrate every five minutes in the middle of the night 'cause I forget about that phone sleep thing. But Google Reader wasn't pretty to work with and I like to judge things based on how pretty they are apparently.
So I checked out this reader called BlogLovin' that everyone was "moving" to.
I noticed two things off the bat: (1) Easy import for Google Reader users and (2) There's an app. So I decided to sign up. You know, see what the big deal was about using a Reader. Luckily, it's super easy 'cause Facebook runs the Internet.
Once you're signed up, you can go to your Settings and scroll down to Import Blogs or just head to www.bloglovin.com/import. Then follow the steps to import your blogs using Google Reader or OPML/XML (please don't ask what that means 'cause I have no idea). I went through the process and imported all three blogs that I had subscribed to (I don't know how or when I subscribed, but I did) and I was ready to clean up my email!
So I have pretty much added all of my blogs I read to my list except for one (it'll be my example of how to follow blogs on BlogLovin'). I basically just didn't delete any emails for a couple days. I went through each one, searched for the blog on BlogLovin', clicked "Follow", unsubcribed from the email subscription and then deleted the email. A bit time consuming BUT SO WORTH IT. Here's how you add a blog: (1) Search for the blog using the search bar ar the top.
If you're lucky, there's only one and it automatically takes you the blog's page. If not, you'll see a list and you can select which blog you're looking for. Once you're on the blog's BlogLovin' page, you have a couple options. You can "Follow" the blog, check out who else follows the blog and look at some blogs that are similar. You can go back and check out the other stuff, but for now: (2) Click on "Follow."
And that's it. You're done. You are now following a blog on BlogLovin'. Super easy right? Now if you want to get extra organized you'll notice two things: (1) The blog you just followed now appears on your list of "Following" on the left and (2) You can create groups.
As you can see I have a few different groups: Challenge (for crafty challenge blogs), Craft (for crafty blogs), Entertainment (stuff about movies, comic books and social science), Family (for stuff to do in the future with my kids), Fashion (for fashion centered blogs), Food ('cause I love food) and Style (blogs that are just darn pretty). Well, I want to put this blog into my Craft Group so I click "Add to a group" and select "Craft." If this your first group or you want to make a new one, you can simply add one using the field on the bottom of the list. It's kinda like Pinterest.
Hooray! I now have my blogs all organized and it will alert me when I have new posts to read. AND THE BEST PART. One email. With all of the new blog posts. BAH! I love it! And the site is so pretty and easy to use.
I'll save you a step or two and just send you right to my blog on BlogLovin'. All you have to do is hit "Follow."
PS. I don't work for BlogLovin' nor did I receive any compensation for this post. I'm just a lady who likes a neat and organized inbox and this is one idea to keep it that way.
